Brain-gut communication describes the bidirectional messages from brain to gut microbiota, mucosa and immune system and vice versa, as well as the communication of the microbiota with the mucosa and the gut immune system. Microbial factors, gut hormones, sensory neurons, and cytokines can modify cerebral function. Autonomic neurons and neuroendocrine factors can modify the gut behavior in return.
